Tax invoices with your ABN and GST, done properly.

PDF Pebble builds an Australian tax invoice in the ATO’s format — titled “Tax Invoice”, your ABN on it, GST at 10%, line items priced and totalled. Then it looks up your client’s ABN so you don’t have to ask them for it.

The part that saves the phone call

Type the business name. Get the ABN.

Start typing a client’s business name and PDF Pebble searches the Australian Business Register — the government’s own free lookup — and fills in the matching ABN. Searching by ABN or ACN works too.

It matters for invoices of $1,000 or more, where the ATO requires the buyer’s identity or ABN on the document. Chasing that detail is normally an email and a wait.

Only the name or number you type in that field is sent to the ABR. Your invoices and scanned documents are never uploaded anywhere.

What the ATO requires on a tax invoice

For a sale under $1,000, seven things. For a sale of $1,000 or more, one more on top.

  • That the document is intended to be a tax invoice
  • The seller’s identity — your business or trading name
  • The seller’s ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A description of the items sold, including quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a statement that the total includes GST
  • The extent to which each item includes GST
  • The buyer’s identity or ABN $1,000 and over

PDF Pebble puts each of these on the invoice as you fill the wizard in. It doesn’t check that the finished document is compliant, and this page isn’t tax advice — if you’re unsure whether GST applies to what you sell, ask the ATO or your accountant.

Questions

What has to be on an Australian tax invoice?

For sales under $1,000 the ATO requires seven things: that the document is intended as a tax invoice, the seller’s identity, the seller’s ABN, the date issued, a description of what was sold with quantity and price, the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the extent to which each item includes GST. For sales of $1,000 or more you must also show the buyer’s identity or their ABN.

Does the document have to say “Tax Invoice”?

The document has to be clearly intended as a tax invoice, and using the words “Tax Invoice” is the ordinary way to do that. PDF Pebble titles Australian invoices “Tax Invoice” automatically when you pick the Australia region.

How do I find a client’s ABN?

Type their business name into the client field and PDF Pebble searches the Australian Business Register, the government’s own free lookup service, and fills in the matching ABN. You can also search by ABN or ACN. Only the name or number you type is sent to the ABR — your invoices and documents never leave your device.

What if I’m not registered for GST?

Then you must not charge GST, and what you issue is an ordinary invoice rather than a tax invoice. Set the GST rate to 0% in the invoice settings. You still include your ABN — without it, a business customer may be required to withhold tax from your payment.

Is the GST rate always 10%?

The standard Australian GST rate is 10%, and that is what the Australia region preset uses. Some supplies are GST-free or input-taxed, in which case you charge no GST on them. The rate is editable, but which rate applies to what you sell is a question for the ATO or your accountant, not for this app.

I sell some GST-free items and some taxable ones. Can one invoice do both?

Yes. Each item in your saved price list can carry its own GST treatment, so a seller with a mixed range — GST-free basic food alongside taxable hot food, say — gets it right line by line instead of having to split the sale across two invoices. The finished tax invoice shows GST and GST-free on separate rows, and the GST amount is calculated on the taxable items only. That also satisfies the ATO requirement to show the extent to which each item includes GST.

Do I have to retype my services on every invoice?

No. Save them once to your price list — with prices, and grouped if you have a lot — and they are one tap away afterwards: start typing and PDF Pebble suggests matches, or open the list and tap. You do not need to set it up in advance either; after you send an invoice, it offers to save the items you just typed.

Is this free?

Yes. No subscription, no trial, no cap on invoices and no account to create. A small banner ad in the app pays for it.
